With just a partially-covered patio, this home in the Vestavia area of Jefferson County AL didn’t offer quite enough of an outdoor living space. The homeowners wanted a larger covered area with room to move around. They wanted enough room to add furniture and a sleek fire table. They wanted an open porch with the comfort of an indoor room—where they could enjoy the outdoors.
The roof of their home covered an area on their patio about 6 feet deep. It was clearly too small for the relaxing outdoor room they had in mind. They asked us to extend the covered area to encompass the entire patio. Our covered porch design added another 8 feet to the depth of their protected space, plenty of room for their comfortable chairs, sofa, and fire table.
Birmingham and Vestavia porch builder Archadeck of Birmingham extended the covered area by adding a gable roof porch cover with an open gable end. The effect is open, airy, and cozy at the same time. Having a roof over the entire patio enabled us to add a ceiling fan and recessed lighting, too. Now the homeowners can enjoy additional shade in the warmer months and a fan to stir up a sweet breeze on demand. For a decorative touch, we added cedar brackets at the top of the posts to create an arch-like aesthetic at the front of the porch.
While enjoying their extended covered porch, the homeowners can now view more of their beautifully-landscaped gardens. Previously, their smaller porch was enclosed on three sides and they could only see straight ahead. While the straight-on view was quite lovely—with a garden, fountain, and picturesque low stone wall—now the view includes the equally-beautiful landscaping on either side.
The homeowners did a wonderful job of outfitting the space. Their outdoor furniture is attractive, incredibly inviting, and provides indoor-level comfort. The fire table adds a richness to the setting, day or night. While we didn’t install the fire table, we did extend the clients’ gas line to facilitate its installation.
